The Religion Love

Darkest nights awaiting me
Face to face where lover's meet
The ink is gone and so are the trees
To write to you, a dimmer feat

I'll sail the ocean on the thought
that your hand awaits my own
I'll fly so high that no one could see
The enemy could never fire his guns so high
to take my wings-- never shall it be!
I'll run the race to meet you there
beneath that dogwood tree, I swear
And kiss you hard till time retreats
and I your gaze's captive keep.

Laughter ceased the day you left
And took with you your bonnet there
that use to hang on the door--
The door with locks you neglected poor

They found us lying nose to chin
And grabbed at you like unchained sin
And dragged you screaming out my name
My lips left wanting and wanting lame

To cry is to lie to my heart
I'll see you once-- at the mark
Where my name is etched under yours that day
At the old dogwood, at the old dogwood
there the old dog lays.
I did it for love-- I did it for love!
I will proclaim and not be ashamed.
